It was early dawn when I got out from my room at Je Meridien hotel where we stayed overnight in Sorong. But I was not alone because my other companions were also out of their rooms for breakfast and prepare themselves. Joni & Weka, our guides on this trip would meet us at 06:30 at the lobby and drive us to the pier. A few minutes past seven, four Toyota Avanza which was hired to drive us started moving towards the pier, located about 15 minutes from the hotel. Arriving at the dock, the crew swiftly moved all our luggages – clothes bags, diving gears, photographic gears and supplies – the results of last night snack-panic-shopping – into the small boat to be brought on board Temukira, a pinisi ship with the capacity of 12 passengers with 12 crew that are provided by a dive tour operators to serve divers – or even non-diver tourist – that want to explore Raja Ampat archipelago. Once we all boarded the ship, Alwi, the cabin crew in-charge for this trip, started presenting fresh fruit juice, a perfect answer to our thirst, as the scorching sun welcomed us on board. Exactly at eight o’clock, Temukira started moving, slowly left the port of Sorong. Our adventure begins!

Not really a well-planned hunting trip…
We have not been going for photo hunting for quite some time. On Friday, we just came up with idea to go for photo hunting to Poumako district. Not a good time to go for landscape view, since the weather was not too bright and the sky was cloudy. So we decided to go for people activities instead…
There are several Kamoro & Asmat villages in this district, but we only went to those places that were located near the main road. Toyota Avanza that we rode would not allow us to go to places where the road surface was too poor. But hey, it was okay! Even from the places we went, we found a lot of good moments, especially with the kids that were always cheerful and smiling. They were not shy when it matters to pose in front of cameras, and they even wanted to have more and more shoot… 😀
We will definitely come back here and meet our new little friends again…
It was over the weekend…
I went for a trip to Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, 1 hour flight from Timika where I currently reside. I’ve never been at Jayapura before, so it was a good chance for me to explore the city and its surrounding area, even though I only had 1 and half days to do that, because by Sunday morning I had to depart early to the airport, flying back to Timika…
Raja Ampat is located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head peninsula on the island of Papua, in Indonesia’s West Papua province. It is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands and cays surrounding the four main islands: Misool, Waigeo, Salawati, and Batanta. This region is widely renowned for its rich marine biodiversity – the richest recorded on earth. Scientist, divers, tourists, have been visiting the region. Doing various activities, from a highly sophisticated research about the marine biodiversity to simply enjoy the beauty of Raja Ampat, both above and under water.
We had been planning this trip for quite a while. The date and the list of participants had been changing for – I don’t know for how many times already. But I kept it in my mind that I had to join the trip. This place is one out of numbers of places in Indonesia that I have put in my destination wish list, a place that I want to visit at least once. One of the reasons is because I wanted to take pictures. Not thinking of underwater activities or photography. Well, at least not yet…
